. What was the inspiration for your wedding, the style/color/scheme? I wanted to have a super romantic yet unfussy feel to our big day so I knew I wanted LOTS of flowers, natural elements, pretty linens and then colors that were romantic and went with the outdoor vibe of a vineyard. We went with dusty rose, deep wine, marsala, gold, ivories, pale pinks and navy. I picked the color of the bridesmaids dresses to be the mauve/dusty rose to pay homage to the colors used in my parents wedding too!
3. Why did you choose your wedding venue? I am from buffalo, NY and my parents have a summer cottage on Crystal Beach so I spent every summer in Canada. I have amazing memories of my time in Canada and always loved when we visited Niagara-on-the-lake for the day. When I brought Gil to Canada for the first time, heabsolutely loved it-so when were were looking, Niagara kept popping up as the main place we were leaning to. When we were looking for venues, we wanted a place that could hold the ceremony + reception outdoors and feel very romantic. When we visited the Riverbend, we loved that many of our guests could stay right on the property and we could hold all of our events there (ceremony, reception, farewell brunch). The Inn itself felt almost like a Southern Estate, which felt really romantic and then the coordinator we met with told us the history of the home being owned by sisters who ran a school for special needs kids out of it and being a teacher, it sold me!
4. What was your favourite wedding moment? There were a few that are tied for my favorites! When my dad saw me for the first time, it was really special. He’s a big burly guy and doesn’t usually show much emotion, but when he saw me he started to cry and told me how beautiful I looked-that almost ruined my makeup! When we said our vows is my other favorite moment, I was struggling to hold back tears when I was talking and Gil squeezed my hand and gave me this big smile and whispered something funny to me and I was able to pull it together-it was a reminder of all the reasons I love him and how he’s always my rock. It was also so special to see my parents in my line of site at that moment too.
5. Any advice for engaged couples planning their wedding? I think figuring out the vibe you want helps to narrow a lot of things down, so think about your vibe, if you as a couple are really relaxed and chill, having a super formal black tie wedding, probably isn’t the best idea. Once you have your vibe, you can narrow down venue choices and also use Instagram to look at real weddings! I found all of my vendors on Instagram by clicking on photos that fit my vibe and style and then finding out who the florist was or the photographer etc. I also found it really helpful to narrow the choices down that I brought to Gil-i wanted him to have a say and like what I was picking but I also didn’t want to have to agree on something from infinite choices, lol, so I would typically pick 2 things and then ask him which he liked better (for invitations, songs, food etc.) He was also really cool about trusting my vision, so he was ok with not being in on every decision and that was fine by me! I would suggest talking to your fiance about how involved they want to be instead of dragging them to look at linens if they don’t really care that much about that. I would also suggest investing in a day of coordinator-I would say this was one of our best investments! It allowed us and our families and bridal party to really enjoy the day and not worry about timing and styling all the little details. And then probably most importantly, enjoy it! Don’t make it the focus of every conversation and day to day stuff-remember to still date and talk about other stuff beyond florals and flatware :)
